Val joined Waddell & Reed as a Financial Advisor in 2006.  He assists individuals, families and businesses with financial planning, wealth management, as well as retirement, tax and estate planning.  

Val holds the designation of Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor.  He graduated from Northwest Nazarene University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with an Accounting emphasis.  Prior to becoming a Financial Advisor with Waddell & Reed, Val served as a board member of Colorado Public Radio's Professional Advisors Council.

Val qualified for the 2020 Waddell & Reed Crest Award, which is among the highest honors for financial advisors affiliated with the company.  Symbolizing performance excellence, this award is bestowed to the most productive financial advisors affiliated with the firm based on an analysis of investment, insurance and financial planning sales.  This year, 100 financial advisors qualified for the Crest Award.

The bottom line for Val is helping clients define their financial goals, and then pursuing those goals with the various resources available to him.

His hobbies include golf, tennis, hiking, snow shoeing, spending time with his family and walking his dog.

J.T. Herbert discovered his interest in the financial services industry during the last four years of his time serving in the U.S. Navy. After getting honorably discharged from the Navy in 2015 and joining Waddell & Reed, he earned his bachelor’s degree and became a Financial Advisor in 2016. He holds the Series 7, 66 with LPL Financial and Life and Health licenses.  

As a third generation financial planner and advisor, he takes pride in his ability to build lasting client relationships that go beyond an annual office visit.  As part of our team, his focus is creating individualized financial plans, implementing the latest technology in an effort to give our clients the highest level of service possible.  We believe J.T. brings a wealth of knowledge to clients in terms of investment and product diversification and catering to the specific expectations of each client.

J.T. is about to expand his family in October when his first child is born, a daughter.  He maintains an active lifestyle while managing work, school, and waiting to be a new father.  During his off days, which are very few, you can find him outside the office snowboarding Colorado or taking his Mastiff pup on a long day hike.


Kim Schell, CRPC

Kim Schell earned her Bachelors and Masters Degrees at the University of Northern Colorado on scholarship.  

Kim worked as a manager and coordinator for public swimming pools and recreation centers for nearly 20 years.  She scheduled and managed up to 150 employees and was instrumental in the design and opening of two recreation centers.

In 2008, Kim joined the Waddell & Reed team as an Advisor Assistant and became a Financial Advisor with Waddell & Reed in 2009.  She earned her Series 7, Series 66, Life and Health licenses and the Certified Retirement Planning Counselor designation.  Kim takes pride in her passion for research and attention to transaction processing details.  She enjoys assisting clients in understanding their current financial situation. 

Kim is a mother of two special needs children, competes on a Masters swim team, and teaches water aerobics.  She believes these diversified experiences contribute to her understanding of the goals of others.

Shelly Shipp

For ten years Shelly worked in the oil & gas industry as the Executive Assistant to the President and Vice President of Operations. Shelly developed an extensive reporting system and focused on the planning, scheduling and preparing of all types of meetings and events for team members and clients.  

She then served as the Executive Assistant to the President and CEO of a software development and trust company responsible for employee human resource needs.  There, Shelly honed her knowledge while providing back office support for various companies. 

Shelly has also owned and assisted in the operations for three Snap-On Tools franchises. This experience allowed her to further grow her professional and organizational business skills.

She joined Val Hein's team in early 2018.  She focuses on client relations, managing work flow and transaction processes.

In her free time Shelly enjoys spending time with her two children who are both very active in sports and volunteering at the schools. 


Denise A. DeLeo, CMFC, MBA

Denise joined Waddell & Reed as a Financial Advisor in 1996. In July of 2021, she transferred to RMW Financial and LPL. She welcomes the opportunity to assist individuals, families and businesses with financial planning, wealth management, as well as retirement, tax and estate planning. She takes great interest in building long term relationships with her clients and their families. Denise finds satisfaction and pride in helping clients reach their personal and financial goals.

She earned the Chartered Mutual Fund Designation from the College of Financial Planning in January 2000. Denise graduated with an M.B.A. from the University of Colorado after earning Bachelor of Science degrees in Environmental Chemistry and Environmental Biology from Southampton College - Long Island University. Denise worked as a chemist for several years prior to deciding to turn her hobby of financial planning into a career.

Denise is a long-time resident of the Pikes Peak region, and has been actively involved in her community. She and her family are passionate Ambassadors for Unbound Organization, a non-profit group that lifts marginalized people out of poverty. She and her family sponsor four families and have built three homes in Guatemala and are looking forward to building a fourth.

Her hobbies include cooking, gardening, crafts, the outdoors and traveling. She has bicycled cross country from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Jasper, Canada along the Rocky Mountains thus igniting her desire to relocate to Colorado. Some of her favorite adventures include Mt. Kenya, Mt. Kilimanjaro, East African photo safari, Indian Himalayas, Mt. Washington and hut to hut cycling in Colorado and Utah.
